Dominican Holidaze 2014
Dominican Holidaze 2014
December 3-7, 2014
Breathless Resort & Spa - Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
2014 was a big year for Holidaze. After 4 years in Mexico, preceeded by 3 years in Jamaica, we made the jump to the Dominican Republic and held the first ever Dominican Holidaze at Breathless Resort & Spa Punta Cana. The new resort and new country gave Holidaze a breathe of fresh air and set the table for another unforgettable four days in our music lovers paradise.
From the moment we first arrived at Breathless, we knew we had found something special. A hip, colorful lobby greeted us as we made our way past the elegant main pool and onto the palm tree-lined beach where the stage was set up. By the time STS9 plugged in to start the music after the customary welcome toast, we had already felt right at home in our new location. Tribe blazed through their Holidaze opening set in grand fashion before paving the way for The Disco Biscuits to try their hand at Dominican rock. Once they wrapped things up on the beach, the Wink Bar became the place to be as Poolside played the event's first late night show.
Day 2 got an action packed start with some of us heading to the greens for a round of golf with some of the Umphrey's guys. Back at the resort, Rob Garza layed down the poolside tunes as we eagerly awaited another night of music on the beach. STS9 again started off the beach festivities with a sunset show, part of a new Holidaze format showcasing each of the three headliners performing to a twilight background over the sea. First-time Holidaze artists Lotus followed them with a dance-provoking set, the kind that justified the years of requests for the Philly jamtronica group to join our party. Before long, it was time for Umphrey's McGee to play their first show of Holidaze, and in true Umphrey's fashion, they brought the heat to the already cooking beach. The late night fun was led by Michal Menert, another first time Holidaze music maker.
The third day featured another afternoon filled with activities, excursions, and poolside music from non other than Poolside. The afternoon's highlight was perhaps the Dance-Off, judged by Zach and Alana of STS9, which featured plenty of laughs, sunshine, and proof that Holidaze fans know how to get down! It was then time for The Disco Biscuits to take over the beach with their sunset show, which was followed by Umphrey's second show of the week and STS9's third and final show. It was jam after jam for nearly 10 straight hours with just a few set changeover breaks sprinkled in. But the party didnt end their as Lotus side project, Luke the Knife, laid it down late night for us. Nights like this are why do Holidaze!
By the time the final day came around, we had grown so comfortable in our new Holidaze home and knew we were all part of something very special. The afternoon's festivities included tennis with some of the artists, the annual Positive Legacy charity auctions, and of course, some music out by pool, this time courtesy of Michal Menert. Just before the sun started to set, Umphrey's McGee took to the beach for their final show of Dominican Holidaze 2014. The Biscuits followed them up with a dandy of their own, before Holidaze vets The New Deal closed us out with a full-on dance party on the beach. Most of us saved room for one more dance though, and we went out with a late night bang to the tune of Rob Garza in the Wink.
8 years later, and Dominican Holidaze proved to be just as fresh and just as incredible as we remember it when we first gathered in Jamiaca in 2007. Here's to many more years together with out Holidaze family!
